Making the Smart Career Choice

Dear Little Man,

In case you didn't know, "The best things in life are free" and "Money can't buy happiness". Some of the most overused cliches involve money, and you aren't really supposed to say that making a living is important. This sounds really nice and all, and while family and happiness are the most important things, you will have to find a way to make a living in your adult life. If you don't, odds are you won't be able to have a family (wives be shoppin'), and you will have a difficult time enjoying what you want to in life (Disneyland ain't free you know). Unfortunately for you, I am not the owner of a record label or software company, so you will have to work for a living.

Sadly, you will probably spend more time at work than you will anywhere else, so you need to at least try to do something that you are passionate about, good at, and enjoy doing. I personally had to go through every other job before I found the one that I wanted to do. I enjoy math, speaking in public, and managing people, so that led me here. You may not know what you want to do just yet, and that is ok. You are only 14 months old, so you do still have some time.

Since you do not have any clue what you want to do just yet, I will go ahead and let you know what I have seen so far. First of all, you have already shown signs that there is an Engineer #2 in the family. You just love to snatch my phone out of my hands and start swiping it. I can only guess you are trying to look up the new app or figure out the fastest way to solve new problems. You have a knack for technology, which is a vital skill. You also have started to attempt to type on a keyboard, primarily by pulling my hands off of it and smacking all of the keys. Today you typed this: 'ksldafja;lsdkjihng;.

You also seem to have a knack for figuring out how things work. Recently, I bought you the Boon PIPES bath toy. They are really neat, and while you like to grab cups of water and pour them on your head, I can't help but also think that when you pour it down these pipes, that you are trying to utilize math. It is almost like you are trying to decipher the inner workings of the Bernoulli Principle, figuring out how pressure and flow are effecting your bath time.

Before beginning your career as an Engineer, I have also been detecting hints that you will start out as a professional athlete. First of all, it looks like you were lucky enough to get your Mom's family's huge hands. These will help you in any sport. Seriously, when those mitts smack me in the face, it feels like getting hit by a 5 year old. It won't be long before you can palm basketballs.

You also seem to have an intense focus that is often only spoke of in top tiered athletes. You will hone in on whatever toy it is I have at a given time, and you will stop at nothing until you have it safely secured. You will even do an open-armed flop right on top of me: which means you could also excel at football! You are also kicking some balls (soccer). You can swing a bat, or any similar shaped toy, at everything in sight (baseball). The way you throw your food once you are done with it also suggests that you will one day be throwing 100+ MPH (baseball again)!

Alright, so maybe suggesting that you are a math, technology, and athletic prodigy seems like a bit of a reach (no pressure). I could argue that anything you do seems like the work of a prodigy destined for a particular role in life. You are already starting to disagree/argue (lawyer). Sometimes you shove your fingers up my nose, just to check things out (doctor). You like to go really fast in your cozy coupe (racecar driver). You like to be loud, even in a room full of people, commanding their attention with your natural charisma (President of the United States?!).

Do not be too alarmed by this letter. I am not going to be Joe Jackson. I (probably) won't even be one of those "crazy" Dad's yelling at the refs during your pee-wee games. In fact, I won't insist that you play the same sports that I did, love math, or even go to the same college (although it does appear that you already love the University of Illinois campus, so if you want to apply, just go to: http://admissions.illinois.edu/apply/).

You are already growing so much, changing, and learning every single day, hour, and even minute. You can see from this letter that I see your strengths and abilities in everything you do, so as long as you are willing to work hard and enjoy yourself, then you will be able to make a great living that you both enjoy and are good at. Once you do that, you can get back to focusing on those things that really matter in life.

Thanks for reading.

Love,
Dad
