More Than Just a Game Pt 2
Dear M & M,
It has now been 3 long, dark, days since we found out that a large part of our life is moving 2,000 miles away from our home. Everything feels different now, without our football team team, the Rams. As I have taken this week to consider our football future, I realized that being your Dad has forced me to choose a certain road for us to head down, kind of like in a horror movie, when one road is all sunshine, and the other is dark and has a guy with a chainsaw standing at the end of it.
Leaving the town in such a fashion has led to a lot of anger from everyone near the St. Louis area, as it should because that is our city. Most are going to boycott the Rams, and maybe even all of football. For us, that would be like boycotting our furnace in the winter. Therefore, no matter how hard I try, we will eventually end up fans of the sport again, which means I have to pick a team. Therefore, let's review the facts.
There are many times in life where something will make you so mad that you can't stand it, because you may try and try and try, but you just lose anyway.
Here are the facts:
1. Being a Rams fan makes me happy, it has for 24 years.
2. St. Louis did all they could to keep the Rams, but at the end of the day, the Rams wanted L.A. no matter what, for their own reasons. St. Louis was the guy at the party who was really nice and got drinks all night, and L.A. was the jerk who was not really paying attention, but left with the girl anyway. The Rams will love LA, sort of.
3. Stan Kroenke (Rams owner, and money hungry taint stain of a man), is a super rich businessman, and nothing I do will impact him. Ultimately, he is the one who has to live with what he does.
After reviewing these facts, it becomes very clear that I cannot control any of them. You guys like to react to similar frustrating situations by screaming, throwing things, or biting me (which I really hate). I like to do these things too, but they don't change the facts. This leads to a conclusion that is as obvious as Marshall's feelings towards broccoli right after I put it on his plate, only to see it go flying around the room: I (so therefore we), will have to remain a Rams fan (as much as we can).
You guys show me the value of making obvious decisions and doing what makes you happy. Marshall could stay mad when I stop you from running out the door and instead put a coat and hat on. Don't get me wrong, while I wrestle your clothes on, you definitely get mad, turn red, and roll around like a worm I am trying to put on a hook. Then, you accept that I am going to put warm clothes on you, and you will ultimately end up outside. For another example, Maggie likes to be held, a lot. I can lay you down to do your own thing, and you could just hang out, but you like being held, so you figure, why bother doing anything else? And you let me know immediately. Then, I run like a mad man, tossing furniture, toys, and unassuming humans, aside to get you picked up, and you are happy again.
We have always been Rams fans, it's what we do. We still know the players and this team, no matter where they are. We can't control all that other crap anyway, but we can make ourselves happy by being a fan. We can't do things out of spite or anger. I have to set the example for you by following what I like to do, instead of being a bitter former-fan who hates the sight of a football. This is going to suck at first, kind of like getting an IV put in. It will be different, but we will figure it out. It was a great 21 years with the team, and now it is simply time for them to go home. Staying a fan will not be the most popular thing to do. Then again, being a Rams fan has never been a real popular thing to do anyway. Because of what you show me, and because I know you are watching me, we will head down the road of sunshine. So, hopefully they start winning. Go Rams.
Then again, maybe this whole letter is crap, and I am just too cheap to buy a bunch of merchandise for someone else. Maybe, this morning Marshall threw on an old Rams helmet and that was all it took. Saying I am using wisdom and teaching you a life lesson sounds better though. I guess you will never really know.
Thanks for reading.
Love,
Dad
