8 Proofs That These are My Kids
Dear M & M,
Even at 17, and 2, months, you both already have strong and unique personalities. Marshall is pretty happy-go-lucky and always smiling, yet very moody when it comes to food, drinks, or waiting too long to take his afternoon nap. Maggie is a bit more extreme, either super happy, super mad, or super serious, with no middle grounds. You are both growing into your own people, but one of the coolest experiences I have had as a Dad, is watching you prove that you are, in fact, my kids.
1. First of all, you love to eat. Neither of you can go to sleep, wake up, or hang out for more than 2 hours, without eating. Maggie loves eating so much, you make cooing noises, and often fall asleep while filling up. Marshall also makes the "mmmmmm"with every bite, as long as it's not a vegetable, or too hot, which results in him spitting food out faster than a Diet Coke spits out Menthols. Other than that, you will eat anything.
Our love for food is so similar that you love to play this fun game when I am eating where you come and lay on my legs and start crying until I give you whatever "we" are eating. Often times, this occurs after you are done eating your portion. Yesterday, Marshall ate his red beans and rice, then your mom's, and then mine, plus a roll. You are your father's son. Maggie also has a good feel for when we are eating, and if your mom sits down with her plate of food, you tend to get hungry immediately. Your Mom stops eating to feed you, Marshall gets plenty of time to finish his plate, and by the time your mom goes to eat, Marshall gets that too. It is the perfect storm, but I have noone to blame but myself, because this storm system was passed on to you from me. (Sorry honey)
2. You understand Lazy Sundays. In our house, we work hard, and we play hard. And then there are Sundays, where we sometimes do nothing. This is not every Sunday, but as many as our schedule will allow. As energetic and needy as you both are, you already understand and respect the need for Lazy Sundays. This past Sunday, we ate, napped, and watched TV/movies (and football of course). Not every kid would go for this relaxation, and Netflix binging, but you guys do. It's in your blood.
3. You love to play. I love play. Here is our nightly routine: I get home, kiss your Mom, and then Marshall and I yell out to each other. I yell: "MAAARRRSSSHHHALLL!!", and he yells "DAD. DAD. DAD." Then we hug, laugh, tickle, and I go to kiss and play with Maggie, while Marshall grabs us whatever toy we will be playing with. Maggie already loves to smack those little toys that hang above your head while you lay down, so we play with those and your chubby cheeks. Then, we crank up some music, and dance, and play. We will continue to iron out our routine through the years, but so far, so great. Also, we now have a playroom! And after Christmas we will have so much awesome stuff to play with! Because of you, I don't have to grow up yet, so thanks for that.
4. You love to dance. You get this from me. I hope you are actually good at it though. If not, sorry for giving you the joy, but not the ability.
5. Marshall love sports. I can't speak for both of you yet, but Marshall I know for sure. In fact, this whole letter came to my mind after this past Saturday. I pulled Marshall out of bed, and went back to my bed to lay for a minute. Marshall immediately followed with a baseball bat and ball (I have no idea where they came from), to which your Mom said, "That is your son.". Besides that, you also love to shoot hoops, hit things with bats, and grab a ball and try to run by me (which is football, although you usually get too excited when you get close and giggle til you drop the ball). We also already watch baseball and football together*.
*Disclaimer: I don't blame you if you choose a different football team to root for. Being a Rams fan is kind of like watching the Titanic, and rooting for the ship.
5. You love to laugh. This may not seem like much, but we really love to laugh. My whole life I have been called a "giggler". I laugh at everything. Any movie that is slightly funny usually gets a laugh out of me, which I will tell others when they ask if they should watch the movie, to which they will usually reply after that I wasted their time. This past weekend, we did a "Try Not to Laugh" Challenge on Youtube with your cousins, and I lost 8 seconds in. You guys are no different. Things that get you laughing include: mouth fart noises, tickling, peek a boo, and even just look at you. You're welcome for this, because bosses who are un-funny to everyone else will take a liking to you later in life.
6. You have ticklish feet. Really ticklish feet, to the point where if effects how we change our socks. Sorry, this one kind of sucks.
7. You are social people. You, your Mom, and I all love to hang out with friends and family. Everyone is welcome in our house. Crowds don't seem to bother you one bit, and you even seem to enjoy mass amounts of attention (go figure). If you would have been some sort of weird, hermit, anti-social home dwellers, our lifestyles would have clashed.
8. Finally, you really love your Mom. This goes without saying. You both love your time with her, and she even has the uncanny ability to rock you both to sleep, at the same time! You love hugging her too, which could be its own point. Marshall always says "Mom", and kisses her non stop. Maggie can be put back to sleep any night by laying you next to your Mom. Your Mom runs this house, keeps this family rolling, coordinates all of our activities, and outfits, and gives us all someone to love like crazy. She has a lot on her plate keeping track of us three. I'm glad you guys recognize it. We should probably even tell her from time to time too.
Well, there are too many more fun things for me to list. You are definitely our kids. Your Mom and I always hoped that having kids just meant adding a couple more to the team who like some of what we like, and it looks like we lucked out. Then again, if you were complete opposites, I would probably write a letter about how much I love that too. Thanks for being such awesome little people. It is already so easy to be proud of you.
Thanks for reading.
Love,
Dad
